I took a high school level class and/or completed Wa. St History in middle school in another district. Can I get that put on my transcript?
Yes you can!
You will just need to contact the middle school you attended and have them send an official transcript to the JHS Counseling Office with note of what class/grade/requirement you are adding to your JHS transcript.
Qualifying Classes:
Alg 1 or above
Leveled World Language classes (ex: Spanish 1)
Washington State (or other state) History
Where can I find an Appendix and How do I submit it?
You can find all the LWSD appendices on the LWSD Forms Library Page.
All appendices can be found under the High School Credit option.
Students need to print off the forms, fill them out and submit them to the MAIN OFFICE.
Students can check their Portfolio Tab in Student Access to see if it has been uploaded. Once it is there, that means it has been approved.
Please note students must submit the appendices prior to starting on any assignments.

What does it mean to be a good student?
A good student pursues scholarship, actively participates in class, and maintains a positive, professional relationship with instructors and peers. Good students have a passion for learning that drives them to fully understand class material rather than just worry about what grades they receive in the course.
It’s important to remember that grades are not the only measure of success. We encourage students to focus on learning and understanding the concepts rather than just getting good grades. This will help them develop a deeper understanding of the subject.

How does grade replacement work?
If your student is wanting to increase their understanding of a class or subject and subsequently improve their grade/GPA, there are options.
Students can retake that class the following year or pursue an out of district credit option.
The key component to this is that the title of the class matches exactly what is listed on the student's transcript.
Grades will still show on transcripts. Once a new grade and higher grade has been posted to the transcript, the lower grade will then no longer be calculated into the total GPA, but the new higher one will be.
With that said the focus of this should be to improved knowledge of the subject and not just to get a better grade on a transcript and have a better GPA.
For more info on the process for out of district credit please visit the Out of District and Alternative Credit Page.
Please be advised that some universities see grade/GPA replacement as padding ones GPA.
Are Cambridge, AP and Running Start classes seen the same?
The short answer is yes.
All Washington State Universities see these three programs as the same. They are seen as college level courses.
There is a difference in the structure of the programs:
Cambridge is a 4-year program with an ACE diploma awarded at the end based on Cambridge exam scores.
AP classes are individual stand-alone classes that college credit can be awarded based on AP exam scores.
Running Start is classes taken at the actual college. Associate's degrees and College Transfer credits are/can be awarded. Please see the Running Start page for more info.

Scheduling
Scheduling
- Can I have a Schedule Change?
- Counselors are in charge of scheduling
- My Student didn't get any of the electives they requested
Can I have a Schedule Change?
No.
We only adhere to limited reasons for Schedule CORRECTIONS.
They are the following:
Student has a hole or "See Counselor" in their schedule
Student received a teacher change for a yearlong class
Student is in a class they have already taken and received credit in. This does not apply to Performing Arts and PE classes.
Student has not met the prerequisite for a class
We would like to emphasize that the schedule correction policy applies equally to all students, including those in the Cambridge program.
Counselors are in charge of scheduling
No!
Despite counselors being involved in On Time Graduation their roles as a counselors is not to grant requests but to support students’ emotional and academic wellbeing (on top of emotional emergencies including thoughts of self harm and suicide) while helping them navigate challenges in alignment with LWSD SEL goals, such as developing a growth mindset and learning to work through less favorable circumstances.

What are the graduation requirements for LWSD Students?
What is the 24 credit requirement breakdown?
Subject Requirement | Credit Requirement |
English/Language Arts | 4.0 |
Social Studies | 3.0 |
Math | 3.0 |
Science | 3.0^ |
World Language | 2.0* |
Health | .5 |
P.E. | 1.5 |
Art* | 2.0 |
CTE | 1.0 |
Electives | 4.0 |
* Personal Pathway Requirement can be used for 2.0 of World Language and/or 1.0 Art
^ 2.0 lab science, 1.0 non-lab science
An elective is any class taken where the subject area has already been completed.
Example: Your student has already completed 2 years of a World Language, and opts for a 3rd. That 3rd credit would be an elective.
What is a Grad Pathway?
Grad pathways are an additional requirement that students must complete. Below are the options available:
- State Assessment: Meet or exceed the graduation scores in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics or in WA-AIM (Washington Access to Instruction & Measurement).
- CTE Sequence: Complete a sequence of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses.*CTE Sequence: Complete a sequence of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses.* See CTE Sequence breakdown for JHS
- Dual Credit: Earn at least one high school credit in ELA and at least one high school credit in math in dual credit courses (Running Start, College in the High School, and/or Career and Technical Education dual credit courses).
- AP/Cambridge: For both ELA and math, earn a 3 or higher on certain Advanced Placement (AP) or an E on certain Cambridge International exams, or pass the course with at least a C+.
- SAT/ACT: Meet or exceed the graduation scores set by SBE in the math and ELA portions of the SAT or ACT.
- Transition Course: Pass a transition course in ELA and math (for example, a Bridge to College course) which allows a student to place directly into a credit-bearing college level course.
- Combination: Meet any combination of at least one ELA and one math option of those options listed in 1-5.
- Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB): Meet standard on the ASVAB by scoring at least the minimum established by the military for eligibility to serve in a branch of the armed services.
*Note: Students who pursue these pathways (ASVAB or CTE) do not need to meet English and math requirements separately. English and math content are embedded in both pathways – and a student who meets either the ASVAB standard or the CTE pathway requirements has met the graduation pathway requirement.

Running Start
- How should underclassmen be planning for Running Start?
- I am not currently doing well in my classes, is Running Start for me?
- If I don't like Running Start or am not doing well, can I come back to JHS mid year?
- Can I start Running Start any quarter?
- Will JHS Staff help me register for my college classes?
- Can my parents communicate with the college?
- Can Cambridge students do Running Start?
How should underclassmen be planning for Running Start?
Underclassmen interested in full time Running Start should try to get the following requirements done prior to starting Running Start:
.5 Health
1.5 PE
2.0 Art or 1.0+ PPR
Complete Algebra 2
For students wanting to do Running Start but unable to complete these requirements prior to starting the program may want to consider doing it part time.
Example:
1st period Algebra 2
2 period Art or PE
Rest of the day Running Start

Registration and Scheduling
- Are counselors in charge of scheduling?
- Can I change my schedule?
- Why did my year long class switch periods?
- What is a PPR?
- What is the High School and Beyond Plan?
- What are Graduation Pathways?
- Can I retake a class?
Are counselors in charge of scheduling?
No!
Counselors are here to monitor academic progress towards On Time Graduation.
It is actually students that are in charge of their schedules. By making good and educated choices when registering for classes.
Please note that courses selected during registration are requests and can't always be guaranteed
Can I change my schedule?
NO!
But there are Schedule Corrections if there is an On Time Graduation concern.
These concerns include:
Holes in schedules (empty periods)
Teacher changes at the semester for yearlong classes
Needing to add a missing on time graduation requirement.
These concerns DO NOT include:
Wanting to change teachers
Dropping a yearlong class
Wanting to change where classes fall in one's schedule
Swapping out a certain class for another
LWSD bases what is offered at schools based on what is requested in the Spring, meaning if a student didn't request that exact class there wouldn't be a spot made for them. Please note course requests are NOT guaranteed.
We would like to emphasize that the schedule correction policy applies equally to all students, including those in the Cambridge program.
Why did my year long class switch periods?
It is a common occurrence for yearlong classes to switch periods at the semester. This can be for various reasons that could include: Accommodate a semester long elective/class
Help balance out class sizes
The important thing to keep in mind is: As long as that yearlong class has the same teacher both semesters, your schedule is ok!
What is a PPR?
PPR = Personalized Pathway Requirements
Related courses that lead to a specific post-high school career or educational outcome chosen by the student based on the student's interests and High School and Beyond Plan, that may include Career & Technical Education, and are intended to provide a focus for the student's learning.
What is the High School and Beyond Plan?
A plan that specifies how you will meet your graduation requirements and what you will do following high school.
There is a component of the HSBP that needs to be completed every year, from 8th – 12th grades.
We use Xello as a platform for students to create and revise their High School & Beyond Plans. You have access to Xello right now!
What are Graduation Pathways?
There are many options available. Students must meet at least one of these pathway options to graduate:
Pass the SBA in ELA & Math
Earn Dual Credit (example: passing college-level math and English classes in Running Start)
Earn a specific score on the SAT/ACT or on AP or Cambridge exams.
Meet standard on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)
Complete a Career & Tech Education sequence of courses.

Post High School Planning
Post High School Planning
- I have questions regarding the details of college applications, financial aid etc

I have questions regarding the details of college applications, financial aid etc
While counselors are here to work through the big picture items when talking about post high school planning, the place to go for specific help is our Career and College Center.
How do colleges view all the different "advanced" programs?
How do colleges view grades?
Often times grades like a P that are not calculated into GPA but show that the student earned credit are seen as the lowest letter grade on the high school grading scale. Colleges will then often recalculate GPAs for students that submit transcripts with a P grade in a classroom based class (Not TA).
W (withdraw) and N (No Credit) grades are also viewed as the same, so not super great to opt for an N instead of a letter grade.
Does JHS rank students? Does JHS have weighted GPA?
On the Common App, is Counselor Recommendation the same as a Letter of Recommendation?
No! These are two different things (confusing I know).
On the Common App the Counselor Recommendation is where we can upload your transcripts, and answer any other questions they colleges might have about your academic history.
A Letter of Recommendation is a different document.
Often times it is good to ask a teacher for these as the Letters of Recommendation are supposed to paint a picture of how you are as a student. Often times teachers can speak to this in much more detail than counselors as you have been a student in their class!
