JHS Statement

Running Start is an elective program and students are expected to navigate all aspects of the program independently and with the provided resources on this page.

The Running Start program allows 11th and 12th grade high school students to take college-level courses at community and technical colleges.

JHS believe that the Running Start program is for students that are academically focused, independent, organized, and mature.

It is expected by the colleges associated with Running Start, that students be able to maintain a 2.0 or higher each college quarter or result in ineligibility for the program.

Students may need to change some of expectations about privileges and responsibilities at school. College is an adult environment where students are expected to engage in the community in a positive, mature and independent manner.

With the new published LWSD schedule, it is advised if students want to do part time Running Start they only take JHS classes 1st and 2nd periods.

**JHS also strongly advises against starting the program in any other quarter than Fall.**

Running Start Frequently Asked Questions

How should underclassmen plan for Running Start?

Underclassmen interested in full time Running Start should try to get the following requirements done prior to starting Running Start:

.5 Health

1.5 PE

2.0 Art or 1.0+ PPR

Complete Algebra 2

For students wanting to do Running Start but unable to complete these requirements prior to starting the program may want to consider doing it part time.

Example:

1st period Algebra 2

2 period Art or PE

I am not doing well in my current JHS classes. Is Running Start for me?

How can I do Part Time Running Start

Due to the new LWSD schedule that has been proposed. The below options have been considered solutions to the scheduling conflicts.

Taking JHS classes exclusively during 1st and/or 2nd period

JHS classes during these periods are the only ones that follow a consistent schedule throughout the week. This consistency helps avoid conflicts with Running Start classes, which may have varying schedules.

Taking Running Start classes online

Students can enroll in online Running Start classes, but they must be scheduled at times that do not overlap with their Juanita High School classes and correspond with their FTE. This ensures that students can attend both without scheduling conflicts.

If I don't like Running Start or am not doing well, can I come back to JHS mid year?

Can I start Running Start at any quarter?

Am I able to retake a RS class to improve my grade?

Yes, just like high school classes, you are able to retake a class to improve your grade and, more importantly, your knowledge!

You just need to make sure that the class you are taking has the exact same course title as the one you want to replace.

Example: You received a C in PoliSci202 you can only use another PoliSci202 class to replace that grade.

Please note that you may need to reach out to our Data Processor to indicate the grade replacement option if it is not reflected on your transcript.

Interested In Running Start, but not currently enrolled as a student at Juanita?

JHS is my home high school, but I attend a different LWSD school

1.Notify your current school registrar that you would like to withdraw and transfer to Juanita to access Running Start

2. Notify the JHS Registrar that you would like to enroll to access Running Start.

3. Send updated Proof of Residency to the JHS Registrar.

To verify residency, parents/guardians must provide two of the items listed below (each bullet counts as one item). All addresses on the documents must match the address of your residence. You will need to present original documents.

• Government Mail (e.g. vehicle registration, Good to Go! bill, letter from Social Security, immigration, unemployment, DMV, USPS Change of Address confirmation letter, or election ballot. Correspondence from the Lake Washington School District does not qualify as Government Correspondence.

• Mortgage Statement or Homeowner’s Insurance Policy Declaration or Property Tax Statement.

• Unexpired Lease/Rental Agreement and include the contact information of the lessor/landlord.

• Utility bill dated within the last 2 months. Accepted utilities include water, sewer, gas, electricity, or garbage (the mailing and service address must be the residence address). Cable, internet and phone bills are not accepted

4. The Registrar will notify you once you are officially enrolled at Juanita and connect you with the appropriate staff member.

5. Complete steps to enroll in Running Start with both the college and JHS as outlined on the JHS website.

I attend a non LWSD school, but JHS would be my home high school

1. Enroll in Juanita High School

2. Notify the JHS Registrar that you have enrolled to access Running Start.

Please let the Registrar know if you plan to pursue a JHS diploma & provide proof of enrollment in your private school OR information on your withdrawal from another school.

3. The Registrar will notify you once you are officially enrolled at Juanita and connect you with the appropriate staff member.

4. Complete steps to enroll in Running Start with both the college and JHS as outlined on the JHS website. Families can access the Orientation Presentation via our website after 3/27.

I am a full time Homeschool student and JHS is my neighborhood school

1. Enroll in Juanita High School

2. Notify the JHS Registrar that you have enrolled to access Running Start. Please let the registrar know if you plan to pursue a JHS diploma & provide annual Intent to Home School form that has been filed with LWSD.

3. The Registrar will notify you once you are officially enrolled at Juanita and connect you with the appropriate counselor.

Process

The process to enroll in summer RS differs slightly from the process to enroll during the school year.

Please read the eligibility requirements, under the Eligibility tab.

The Enrollment Verification Form required for summer quarter is DIFFERENT than the EVF required for fall, winter, and spring quarters. You still must use the MS Form below to request your EVF.

Eligibility

Summer quarter Running Start is now open to students completing the 10th grade and those in 11th and 12th grade with available AAFTE.

Graduating students within 15 credits of an AA degree may access “after-exit” funding to complete the summer Running Start courses required for the degree up to 15 credits.

Non-graduating students who have met their Running Start enrollment limits may take up to 10 credits through “after-exit” funding.

You can only request one future quarter EVF at a time. Despite colleges accepting Winter and Spring, you will need to request your Spring EVF during the request periods for Spring Quarter.
